About us

We view collaboration across national borders and cultural boundaries as an important part of the artistical and critically reflective education at all levels.

Umeå Academy of Fine Arts started in 1987 and is part of the Umeå Arts Campus at Umeå University, together with the Umeå School of Architecture, Umeå Institute of Design, Bildmuseet, Curiosum. Here is also a library with focus on art, design and architecture.

The programmes in Fine Arts at Umeå Academy of Fine Arts provide the students with practical and theoretical competence to work as a professional artist in Sweden and worldwide. The programmes focus on the individual students’ artistical projects which they develop together with the academy’s tutorial team. The school was founded in 1987 and has complete workshops for wood, metal, plaster, bronze, print making, photo, video, sound and computer based artistical forms.

The tutorials are typically project and workshop oriented, with a number of international professional artists and guest teachers. This is reflected in the creative diversification of contemporary art. The critical artistic potential and diversive way of thinking, culture and free expression, are at focus.

Our Academy offers three degree programmes in Fine Arts: a Bachelor's programme, a Master's programme, and a PhD programme on artistic grounds. We also offer summer courses.

Workshops for our students

We have well-equipped and accessible workshops for our students. We want the students to get to know the workshops through their own needs and at their own pace.
